Abbreviation of the United Nations (Organisation), which was created on June 26, 1945, by an assembly of 49 States gathered at the San Francisco Conference. Its purpose is to maintain peace and international safety, guarantee equality and independence for all people, develop co-operation in economic, social and cultural fields, and defend human rights. Italy was admitted on December 14, 1955.
