After the elections that brought about independence from Indonesia, many violent encounters took place between Timor’s population and some pro-Indonesian factions which were in favour of maintaining the status quo.

An Italian contingent participated under the UN flag in operations to re-establish  peace in East Timor from November 1999 to 2000.
