In 1973, an Italian mission of technical-military co-operation was organised in Malta with the purpose to train the Pioneer Corps, who were destined to be engaged in public utility works. The mission, retired in 1979, was restored in 1981 by the DIATN (Italian Delegation of Technical and Military Assistance) and the MICTN (Mission of Technical Co-operation). On July 14, 1988, it was renamed MIATM.
