The UN intervened to protect the retreat of Belgian troops and the stability of the country by controlling the neutralization of the foreigner soldiers, paramilitaries, and mercenaries.

On November 11, 1961, a division of Italian airmen who delivered foodstuffs to the population of the ex-Belgian Congo, was barbarously killed at Kindu.

From 1964 to 1973, the Italian Air Force maintained a training mission in the Congo.
